You don’t join a crew because you fit. You’re chosen, or you choose, because you can be counted on.

A tribe is formed through gravitational pull.
Shared values. Shared language. Shared worldview.

A crew is formed through situational necessity.
Clear roles. Defined stakes. Mutual dependence.

A tribe asks: Do I feel seen here?
A crew asks: Can I trust you when it matters?

A tribe expands.
A crew sharpens.

A tribe can exist indefinitely.
A crew exists because something is at stake.

And here’s the uncomfortable part:

Most people spend their lives optimizing for tribe.

Very few deliberately step into crew.

NOW: Under real pressure

You may be surrounded by people who understand you.
Who support you. Who share your lens.

But when pressure enters the room, something shifts.

In a cockpit at 3,000 feet after an engine failure, nobody cares who feels understood. They care who flies the aircraft. Who calls the checklist. Who speaks up when something is missed.

In an ICU, when a patient starts to crash, the room reorganizes instantly. Not around personalities. Around roles. Airway. Medication. Monitoring. Callouts.

No debate. No drift. No ambiguity.

The same thing happens in your world. Just with different stakes. And less acknowledgment.

You start to see who can hold weight.
Who disappears. Who over-functions. Who steadies the system.

The illusion breaks.

Not everyone in your tribe is built for your crew. That’s not judgment. It’s structure.

If you can’t name who does what when things go sideways, you don’t have a crew.

You have proximity.

Think like a mission planner.

Before a launch, organizations like NASA don’t ask who connects best. They ask who can operate when there is no margin for error.

Who absorbs pressure instead of amplifying it.

Not chemistry. Capability.

What if you looked at your circle through that lens?

Who runs toward the problem. Who can disagree without destabilizing trust.
Who tells you the truth before it’s safe.

And then the harder turn:

Where are you still showing up as a tribe member when the moment is asking you to be crew?

Signaling alignment. Avoiding commitment. Offering support without owning outcome.

These are not subtle differences.

A tribe lets you be seen. A crew requires you to be counted on.

I see a world where we stop confusing connection with readiness.

But crews are built differently.

Chosen with intention. Defined by role. Tested under pressure.

Where founders don’t just build teams they like. They build teams they would trust when things break.

Where leaders don’t just talk about culture. They define what reliability actually looks like when the system is stressed.

Where people stop optimizing for alignment and start preparing for consequence.

Because the life you’re moving toward will not be navigated by tribe alone.

At some point, the room changes.

The conversation tightens. The stakes become real. The margin disappears.

And in that moment, there is no tribe.

Only crew.

And the only question left is not whether you belong.

This week, it showed up in three very different ways.

My son Spencer completed his second triathlon.

If you don’t know him, that might just sound like a proud dad moment. And it is.

But Spencer is on the autism spectrum.

So what looks like a race is something else entirely.

Preparation. Routine. Managing the unexpected. Swimming in open water, with no boundaries. Staying with it when the environment shifts.

Overcoming the fear of riding a bike in the streets with rolling hills and cars. Managing fuel intake when textures are a thing.

What I felt watching him wasn’t just pride.

It was recalibration.

Of what effort looks like. Of what persistence actually means.
Of what’s possible when someone commits in their own way.

Perspective doesn’t always arrive as insight.

Sometimes it arrives as admiration that changes your internal scale. The kind that makes you look in the mirror.

Later in the week, I re-engaged with a former client.

Someone I hadn’t worked with in years.

Her narrative of being a “Velvet Hammer” has been embraced and grown into her identity.

She is known for her kindness. Empathic nature. Yet, appreciated for her unmistakably direct and firm expectations.

What struck me wasn’t the moniker.

It was how rare that combination has become.

In a world that often swings between over-softening and over-correcting,
She holds both. She has come to respect the moniker, and her teams respect her for how she leads.

It lands, providing a sense of confidence.

Not because it’s balanced. Because it’s integrated. That’s perspective too.

Knowing you don’t have to choose between being human and being clear.

And then there’s the broader lens.

The one that only shows up with time. When you’ve seen enough cycles to recognize the pattern underneath the moment.

We’re living through a period that feels like acceleration. AI. Change. The rewiring of how things work.

For many, it feels like rupture.

For others, it feels familiar.

Not because it’s the same.

Because the shape of it is.

Uncertainty. Overcorrection. Rebuilding.

Perspective doesn’t remove the intensity.

It tempers the reaction.

Not everything that feels cataclysmic is unprecedented. It contributes to your Narrative Worth in ways that you hadn’t planned for.

Perspective isn’t something you have.

There’s a moment after clarity that no one talks about.

The moment right after you see it.

The thing that’s obvious once you say it out loud.

For a brief window, everything lines up.

It feels clean. Certain.

And then…

Life re-enters.

Old patterns.

Existing commitments.

Other people’s expectations.

The environment you were in before you saw it.

And slowly, almost predictably, the clarity gets replaced.

Not because it was wrong.

Because it wasn’t supported.

So what gets labeled as a lack of discipline…

is often something else entirely.

Taken together, they made me stop and look at my body of work differently. Not as a series of roles or chapters, but as something cumulative. Something that only reveals its shape when you step back long enough to see it.

And what became clear is this.

There’s a moment many accomplished people don’t expect.

They’ve done the work and built a career.

Collected the experiences that were supposed to add up to clarity.

But instead, something else happens.

The story fragments.

What once felt like momentum now feels like noise.

What once differentiated them now blends in.

What once made sense…no longer quite fits.

This isn’t a capability problem.

It’s a narrative problem.

In a market that rewards simplicity, complexity gets misread as inconsistency.

In a world that moves faster, depth gets overlooked.

So people default.

They simplify too much.

They borrow language that isn’t theirs.

They position themselves in ways that feel legible, but not true.

And over time, that gap widens.

Between what they’ve lived.

And what they’re able to express.

It’s a date I’ve carried for a long time. A marker.

The day I drove from Michigan and crossed into California.

Three different houses were purchased and moved into on that day.

The life chapters.

The quiet checkpoints along the way.

Every year, without announcing it, I come back to it.

Not to celebrate. To take inventory.

Where am I?

What have I built?

What still feels true?

What no longer does?

It’s less reflection. More reckoning.

This year, something happened today, the day before April 1.

It wasn’t a framework.

It wasn’t a new idea.

It was a name.

For something I’ve been building toward for 26 years without knowing what to call it.

Living Mosaic.

Not polished. Not finalized. But true.

It was something I had written about before as a concept.

We are not linear, chronological beings.

We are spatial.

Cumulative.

Every experience. Every conversation. Every risk. Every chapter.

A tile.

Individually, they don’t always make sense.

Some feel out of place.

Some feel unfinished.

Some don’t seem to belong at all.

But they stay.

And over time, something starts to happen.

Not immediately.

Only when you step back far enough.

You begin to see the image.

Not perfectly.

Not completely.

But enough to recognize.

There’s coherence here.

That’s what clicked for me.

Not what I’ve been doing.

What I’ve been building.

When I think back to that drive into California on April 1.

I don’t see a starting point anymore.

I see the first visible tile.

There were others before it.

There have been thousands since.

None of them disappeared.

They accumulated.

This is what I’ve been trying to describe with Narrative Worth.

Not as positioning.

As a truth.

A life does not depreciate. It compounds.

The experiences that felt disconnected at the time.

The roles that didn’t quite fit.

The conversations that stayed with you longer than expected.

They don’t get lost.

They layer.

And eventually, they resolve into something that only becomes visible with distance.

This month, I’ve been circling this without naming it.

Being an inaugural guest on the Maybe Podcast hosted by a long-time friend Rob McLoughlin, triggered a reflection on accumulated ties compiled by maybe’s.

Reflecting on my wife of 39 years this year and the births of Spencer and our identical girls, Emma and Olivia. Our collective efforts to live a dual life in the worlds of neurodivergent and neurotypical existence.

A series of atypical experiences that produce unique tiles that only 20% of the population gets to see daily.

Clicking on “The Quiet Ego Club” zoom call today that touched on listening and allowing others to be seen and heard.

The idea of naming something before you fully understand it.

Today, it landed.

This is one of them.

The pace of change is beyond our ability to comprehend.

The awakening by those who are deep into their AI stack that they are being greeted with a dizzying array of movements and next steps processed overnight.

Their Oura ring outputs tell them they have bad readiness scores and declining sleep patterns.

What do you anchor to now?

I read something this week that stopped me.

A reframing of how time itself is being repriced.

Not in theory.

In practice.

Shorter cycles.

Compressed decisions.

Perpetual inputs.

Continuous partial attention.

We are no longer moving through time in a linear way.

We are being pulled through it.

And when time fragments, something else begins to erode: Continuity.

The sense that who you are today connects cleanly to who you were yesterday.

This is where disorientation begins.

Not because the world is chaotic, but because there is nothing stable to reference inside it.

In unstable systems, speed without anchoring creates drift.

This is what I am seeing more clearly in my work and personal life.

Not a lack of intelligence.

Not a lack of ambition.

A lack of anchoring.

A few days ago, a recent client said something that stayed with me.

Without her ShiftStory, without a clear personal narrative she could return to, she would feel lost in what is happening right now.

Not overwhelmed. Lost.

That distinction matters.

Because when you are anchored, you can move through volatility.

When you are not, you get pulled by it.

Anchoring is not rigidity.

It is not holding onto an outdated identity.

It is having a point of internal reference that allows you to navigate change without losing coherence.

This is Narrative Worth at work.

Not as positioning.

As orientation.

A well-formed narrative does not eliminate uncertainty.

It absorbs it.

It gives you a way to interpret what is happening in real time.

To decide what matters.

To ignore what does not.

To move with intention instead of reaction.

Without that anchor, everything feels equally urgent.

And that is where drift accelerates.

If time is compressing and environments are destabilizing, anchoring becomes a discipline.

Not something you “have.”

Something you practice.

Ask yourself:

• What is my point of reference when everything speeds up?

• Where do I return when the inputs become overwhelming?

• What part of my story remains stable, even as the environment shifts?

If you cannot answer those questions clearly, you are navigating without an anchor.

And the cost of that is increasing.

For decades, many of these individuals have been asked to adapt to the system.

And here is the uncomfortable truth.

Many corporations are systematically underutilizing neurodivergent executives, not because of lack of capability, but because the system cannot interpret the way they think.

What looks like distraction is often pattern recognition.

What looks like divergence is often synthesis.

What looks like non-conformity is often signal.

We are filtering out the very cognition we now need.

They don’t fade. They imprint.

One of mine came while working at the largest media company in the world.

AOL + Time Warner.

It was the early days after the merger. The prevailing feeling was that everything was possible.

But the lesson I carried forward had nothing to do with media.

It had everything to do with incentives and behavior.

When incentives are misaligned inside organizations, things slow down.

Decisions stall. Momentum evaporates.

But something else emerges in those environments.

Social capital.

The ability to move an idea forward through trust, relationships, and belief when the formal system isn’t designed to help you.

I saw this firsthand while creating Music Goes Global for my largest client at the time, Toyota.

It was a big idea.

Dozens of execution needs.

But the path to making it real was anything but straightforward.

In environments like this, familiar strategies stop working. Optimism feels naive. Certainty feels dishonest.

The pressure to “stay positive” collides with the instinct to stay realistic.

People either harden into false certainty or soften into quiet withdrawal.

Neither is sustainable.

The problem isn’t uncertainty itself.

It’s being asked to function as if the ground were still firm.

Orientation is not knowing what will happen.

It’s knowing where you are standing while things move.

It makes it navigable.

It lets you remain clear without becoming rigid.

Present without becoming overwhelmed.

If the world feels harder to stand in right now, it may not be because you’re faltering.

Nothing has changed externally.

But internally, something steadies.

You are no longer negotiating with the moment.

You are inhabiting it.

We are taught to fear stillness.

To confuse staying with stalling.

To assume that if nothing is moving, something must be wrong.

But steadiness is not the absence of motion.

It is the absence of friction.

Stagnation feels heavy.

Steadiness feels grounded.

One drains energy. The other restores it.

This is the difference between waiting and arriving.

Between holding your breath and finally exhaling.

When you are steady enough to stay,

you stop narrating your uncertainty as delay.

You stop measuring yourself against an imagined elsewhere.

There is a temptation, even here, to look for signals.

To ask what this steadiness is preparing you for.

To wonder what it will eventually become.

But this moment does not ask to be translated.

It asks to be lived.

To remain long enough for something honest to take shape without being forced into clarity too soon.

Staying does not mean settling.

It means allowing the ground beneath you to firm up.

Nothing needs to move for this to be real.

Nothing needs to be decided for this to matter.

Some seasons do not end with answers.

They end with footing.

And that is enough.

The moment after misreading

After a period of misrecognition comes a subtler moment.

Not clarity.

Not decision.

A pause.

You stop arguing with the moment.

You stop trying to name it too quickly.

You begin to notice where you are inside it.

This is often when people say nothing is happening.

But something is.

Attention has shifted.

You’re no longer asking, “What is this?”

You’re asking, “Where am I standing within it?”

That question doesn’t demand answers.

It asks for honesty.

Orientation is not a plan

We often confuse orientation with direction.

Direction points forward.

Orientation tells you where you are.

Without orientation, direction becomes noise.

Urgency without accuracy.

Motion without meaning.

Orientation is quieter.

It shows up as small recognitions.

What no longer feels true.

What still does.

What drains energy.

What steadies it.

Nothing dramatic changes on the outside.

But internally, something aligns.

You are no longer pushing against the moment.

You are standing inside it.

This is not progress you can measure.

It is coherence you can feel.

Staying with the position

There is a temptation here to move quickly.

To translate awareness into action.

To turn orientation into a strategy.

But this moment asks for something else.

To stay with the position long enough

for it to teach you where movement would be honest

and where it would be performative.

Orientation doesn’t rush.

It listens.

It allows direction to emerge rather than be forced.

If you’re here, nothing is required of you yet.

No decision.

No declaration.

Just the willingness to remain present

long enough to know where you are standing

before deciding where to go.

That patience is not delay.

It’s accuracy.

There are periods in life that feel unstable, not because something is wrong, but because something is unfinished.

From the inside, they are experienced as acceleration, tension, and uncertainty. Familiar markers stop working. Old language loses its grip. New meaning has not yet formed.

We tend to judge these moments harshly, assuming confusion signals decline. But history suggests something else is often happening.

Some of the most consequential eras were lived without knowing what they would later be called.

When the era hasn’t announced itself yet.

There are moments that feel like decline only because they haven’t been named.

From the inside, they feel unstable.

Noisy. Accelerated. Uncertain.

From the outside. Later. They are often called something else entirely.

A flourishing.

A turning.

A beginning.

The mistake we make is assuming that meaning is supposed to be legible while we’re living it.

Most eras aren’t experienced as beautiful.

They’re experienced as confusing.

This is what it feels like to live before the label arrives.

Why we misread the moment we’re in

History has a pattern we rarely notice.

Periods that later become known for creativity, expansion, and cultural shift were not recognized as such at the time. They were lived as tension.

Old structures were still standing, but losing authority.

New ideas were forming, but not yet trusted.

People sensed movement without understanding its direction.

From inside those moments, it didn’t feel like a golden age.

It felt like instability.

We often confuse “I don’t recognize this yet” with “this is wrong.”

But unfamiliarity is not evidence of failure.

It’s evidence that language hasn’t caught up to experience.

Meaning is almost always retroactive.

NEXT

Staying present before the story hardens

There is a temptation, especially now, to rush toward conclusions.

To label the moment too quickly.

To decide whether this is progress or decline.

To force a story onto something that is still forming.

But some periods ask for a different posture.

Not optimism.

Not pessimism.

Attention.

The ability to stand inside change without demanding it explain itself yet.

If this moment feels unsettled, that doesn’t mean it lacks significance.

It may simply mean you’re living it from the inside.

Some eras only become beautiful once we’ve survived them.

Others are shaping us precisely because we don’t yet know what to call them.

Being here doesn’t require certainty.

Only the willingness to notice what’s emerging before it’s named.

There is a moment that rarely gets named.

It arrives quietly. Not as crisis. Not as collapse.

More like a low-grade hum you can’t turn off.

Life is working.

You are competent. Productive. Reliable.

The systems you built still hold. And yet something is misaligned.

Not broken. Not dramatic.

Just… off.

This is the year that lives between identities.

The year after the old story stops fitting, but before a new one has words.

You don’t want to blow things up.

You also can’t keep carrying everything forward.

Your calendar still makes sense.

Your life, less so.

This is not confusion.

It is awareness arriving ahead of permission.

When Optimization Stops Working

Most people assume change begins with desire. It doesn’t.

Change begins when optimization fails.

When refining, improving, and upgrading no longer produce relief.

When every productivity tweak delivers diminishing returns.

When “doing it better” stops answering the deeper question of “why.”

This is the disorienting part.

From the outside, nothing looks wrong.

From the inside, something feels unfinished.

You may still be succeeding inside an old container.

But the container itself is no longer yours.

The most destabilizing moment isn’t collapse.

It’s competence without meaning.

That’s the in-between year.

The year when the old language works publicly, but fails privately.

Where you can perform who you are, but no longer feel inside it.

Reimagine is not a declaration. It’s a condition.

It begins the moment you stop forcing clarity and start listening to tension.

Not the tension that demands urgency.

The quieter one that asks for honesty.

You don’t need a five-year plan right now.

You don’t need a reinvention story.

You don’t even need confidence.

There is permission to stand in the doorway without rushing through it.

Because the in-between year isn’t wasted time. It’s incubation.

It’s where identity loosens before it reforms. Where meaning reorganizes before it announces itself.

There are moments when an idea you’ve spent years talking about suddenly stops being theoretical. It becomes embodied.

This week, I’m packing up a house we’ve lived in for eight years. Eight years of routines. Objects. Papers. Old decks. Old assumptions. And, from a Napa perspective, living through harvests.

All artifacts of who I was becoming, who I was being, and who I thought I needed to remain to co-exist in a fast-changing society. We lived the COVID years here. Our business, Kitchen Collective, brought us here to redefine the meaning of breaking bread with friends and community.

At the same time, I’m stepping into 65 and toward my Word of the Year for 2026 - Reimagine, beginning January 3rd.

Not as an aspiration, but as a commitment.

Which is when it hit me.

I’m not writing about crossing the chasm.

I’m in it.

Geoffrey Moore famously described the perilous gap between early belief and mainstream adoption in Crossing the Chasm.

What the book doesn’t dwell on is this: The same chasm also exists in a life.

Between who you’ve been and who you know you can no longer be.

Between comfort and coherence.

Between staying impressive and becoming true. The chasm of performative self versus intuitive self that you now get to impart in new ways. The calling of AI adds to the curiosity to realize a dream you had decades ago, can now be realized, and you are tasting the possibilities.

NOW: Standing at the Edge

There’s a strange disorientation that happens when you start letting go.

You don’t miss things yet. You notice their weight.

Boxes fill with reminders of past versions of competence.

Job titles. Speaking decks. Notes from moments when the world applauded a certain shape of you. The big stages. The dramatic sleepless nights. The endless pursuit of perfection and polish.

None of it is wrong.

But none of it is sufficient anymore.

This is the phase most people avoid.

The pause before momentum.

The silence before the next sentence.

The chasm is not dramatic at first.

It’s quiet.

It asks uncomfortable questions:

Who are you without the scaffolding?

What stays when the proof points are packed away?

What part of your identity have you been outsourcing to habit (good and bad)?

This is not failure.

This is friction.

And friction is often the signal that something real is about to happen. In narrative terms, I refer to this as resistance.

NEW: The Liminal State

Anthropologists have a word for this. Liminality.

The space between. No longer what you were. Not yet what you’re becoming.

It’s an unstable state.

Which is why institutions rush people through it.

Why resumes demand continuity.

Why bios prefer clean arcs, versus squiggly broken lines and gaps.

But liminality is where reassembly happens.

This is where anti-fragility lives.

Not in certainty.

Not in control.

But in the willingness to be temporarily undefined.

I’m discarding more than objects right now.

I’m shedding reflexes.

Old reward systems.

Outdated definitions of relevance.

Crossing a chasm requires trust.

Not blind optimism.

But earned trust in your inner compass.

You don’t leap.

You commit.

And commitment looks like this:

Saying yes before the path is visible.

Choosing coherence over reassurance.

Letting the next version of you pull harder than the last one clings. And, trust me, the cling is real.

NEXT: The Other Side Is Not the Point

Here’s the part most people get wrong.

The goal isn’t to arrive safely on the other side.

The goal is to become someone capable of “Crossing the Chasm” again.

That’s the long game.

At 65, I’m not optimizing for scale.

I’m optimizing for alignment.

For narrative agency.

For a life that can adapt without erasing itself.

The chasm will keep appearing.

New technologies. New identities. New seasons.

AI didn’t create this reality. It revealed it.

Those who cling to past containers will experience every change as loss.

Those who practice becoming will experience change as composition.

This is the work beneath ShiftStory.

Not reinvention theater.

Not personal branding.

But the discipline of reassembling your fragments into something honest, resonant, and alive. A vision I refer to as a “living mosaic”.

THE PAYOFF: Crossing Is a Choice

In the Now, we recognize the edge.

In the New, we stay long enough to feel what’s being asked of us.

In the Next, we move forward without pretending we have it all figured out.

Crossing the chasm is not a career move.

It’s a character decision.

You don’t cross because you’re certain.

You cross because staying would require you to become smaller.

As I close one house and step toward a new chapter, I’m reminded of this.

The most meaningful transitions don’t reward speed.

They reward honesty.

And the courage to say: This version carried me far. The next one will carry me true.

If you’re standing at your own edge, take your time.

But don’t turn back out of habit.

The chasm is not the threat.

Avoiding it is.
