Doors
The stories we tell before anyone steps inside.
Every trip I take, I become fascinated with doors.
Not just beautiful doors. Every kind of door.
The weathered wooden doors of ancient European villages. The brightly painted doors of tropical islands. The massive fortified entrances of Roman walls. The understated steel and glass entrances of modern wineries.
Each one says something before a single word is spoken.
For thousands of years, civilizations have understood something we often overlook. A door has never been just an entrance. It is a declaration. It announces what lies beyond, while shaping the expectations of those about to cross the threshold.
A door is an introduction.
It made me wonder…
What kind of door do we present to the world?
NOW
Doors have always served two purposes.
The Romans understood this so deeply that they dedicated an entire god to doorways and transitions. Janus was depicted with two faces. One looking backward, the other looking forward. Every doorway represented both reflection and possibility. Every threshold invited us to leave one chapter while stepping into another.
The obvious one is protection. They keep danger out and create safety within.
But history tells us they have always done something else. They communicate.
The size of a castle gate projected power.
The towering gates of medieval castles projected strength before a visitor ever entered. The carved doors of cathedrals invited reverence. Throughout the Mediterranean, brightly painted doors reflected local identity, craftsmanship, and pride. Even today, the entrance to a winery quietly signals whether you’re about to experience tradition, innovation, elegance, or family heritage.
The intricate carvings on medieval church doors invited reverence.
The colorful doors throughout the Mediterranean reflected pride, identity, craftsmanship, and place.
A winery’s entrance quietly tells you whether you’re about to experience luxury, tradition, innovation, or family heritage.
Long before you taste the wine, you’ve already begun forming expectations.
People do the same thing.
Our LinkedIn profile.
Our website.
Our handshake.
Our voice.
Our curiosity.
Our generosity.
Every interaction is a door.
The question isn’t whether people form first impressions.
The question is whether we’ve been intentional about the one we’re creating.
NEW
The more I travel, the more I realize that the best doors don’t try to impress.
The doors that stay with me aren’t always the grandest. They’re the ones that feel authentic. Their weathered wood, worn handles, faded paint, and careful restoration reveal a life that has been lived, not manufactured.
They prepare.
They create anticipation for what’s waiting on the other side.
A remarkable door creates congruence between expectation and experience.
The experience behind the door fulfills the promise made by the door itself.
That’s true for people as well.
Your Narrative Worth isn’t built only by what you’ve accomplished.
It’s built on the confidence others have that stepping into your world will be worth their time.
Do you create curiosity?
Do you create trust?
Do you create a sense that what’s behind your door is thoughtful, generous, and worth exploring?
Every conversation is someone deciding whether to walk through your door.
Every opportunity begins there.
BUILDING NARRATIVE WORTH
“Your reputation isn’t built after someone walks through your door. It’s built by whether your door invites the right people to walk through it in the first place.”

AI is making it easier than ever to produce polished outputs.
Beautiful websites.
Perfect presentations.
Professional biographies.
Every door can now look impressive.
AI can design a beautiful entrance in seconds. What it cannot manufacture is what people discover once they step inside.
Which means appearance alone is becoming less valuable.
The future belongs to people and organizations whose doors honestly reflect what’s inside.
Consistency will become a competitive advantage.
The strongest narratives won’t belong to those with the most polished doors. They’ll belong to those whose doors faithfully represent what people actually experience.
Congruence will become a form of trust.
Your narrative isn’t just the story you tell after people meet you.
It’s the invitation you extend before they ever do.
So perhaps one of the most important questions we can ask ourselves is this:
If someone encountered your door today, would they want to come in?
Perhaps that’s why doors have fascinated us for centuries. They aren’t simply barriers between outside and inside. They’re invitations. They ask every passerby the same quiet question:
Are you curious enough to step through?
Because every meaningful relationship, every career opportunity, every client engagement, and every transformation begins at a threshold.
And every threshold begins with a door.
I’m Tobin Trevarthen.
I’ve spent the first 30 years inside the companies doing the work, building my Narrative Equity from a horizontal lens. I spent the last 12 years working across companies and executives to find the story that holds only to discover, somewhere along the way, that the deeper work was always about something else.
We are not linear, chronological beings. We are spatial. Cumulative. Mosaic.
Every encounter adds a tile. Every shift — in role, in identity, in what the world asks of you — changes the image. The meaning only becomes visible when you step far enough back to see the whole.
A holistic view similar to a Living Mosaic™. And the value it accumulates over time, through clarity, coherence, and conscious design, is what I call Narrative Worth™.
Today, I work with founders and executives at the moments when the old story no longer holds, and the new one hasn’t formed yet. That inflection point is where I live. My perspective represents a lived experience.
This includes neurodivergent executives whose minds were never meant to fit the standard frame and whose most extraordinary tiles often go unseen for exactly that reason.
Helping them build the mosaic that finally holds all of who they are is some of the most important work I do.
ShiftStory™ is where we do that work together.
I would be honored to help you shift your story. I believe your Narrative Worth™ is the most valuable asset you will ever own.
