When John Wooden coached, he didn’t just teach basketball.
He taught becoming.
When Pete Carroll resurrected his career, it wasn’t with better plays, he created a coaching philosophy.
In both cases, greatness didn’t come from a better strategy.
It came from a sharper center.
A way of seeing.
A way of doing.
A way of being.
And now here’s the big question:
Do you have a philosophy?
Not a motto. Not a mission.
A living set of beliefs that shape how you show up and what you shape in return?
NOW: Direction Without Definition
We’re in an era of incredible noise.
Endless content. Instant tools. Smart automation.
It’s easy to operate.
It’s harder to orient.
And here’s the trap:
You can be wildly productive without ever being deeply clear.
That’s what happened to Pete Carroll.
After a brutal firing, he sat with the question: Who am I as a coach?
Not what do I do, but why do I do it the way I do it?
That’s when the shift happened.
He crafted a philosophy. And it changed everything.
What about you?
Ask yourself:
~ Do you know your personal principles, or do you borrow others’ playbooks?
~ Can you name the lens through which you lead, decide, and create?
~ Is your work an expression of something deeply owned, or just an activity?
NEW: Philosophy as Differentiation in the Age of AI
AI is going to be very, very good at doing.
What it won’t be good at? Being.
That’s where you come in.
Not with more speed. But with more soul.
Not just efficiency. But essence.
The most future-fit people will not be the fastest.
They’ll be the most anchored.
They’ll move with intention, not just iteration.
Because they’re not guessing who they are. They’re guiding from it.
That’s your edge.
That’s your magnet.
Call it your:
North Star.
Inner Operating System.
ShiftStory.
Philosophy.
Just make sure you can identify it and live it.
NEXT: Write It Down. Live It Out.
We tend to think of philosophy as abstract.
Something for sages or sideline legends.
But what if it’s just this:
A way of holding yourself accountable to the version of you the world truly needs.
Start small. Write your rules. Rehearse your truths.
Make it visible. Make it portable.
So when uncertainty hits, you’re not reactive. You’re rooted.
Ask yourself:
~ What are the 3 beliefs I want to live by no matter what changes?
~ What’s the mindset I want others to feel when they work with me?
~ What part of me am I ready to stop outsourcing—and start embodying?
THE PAYOFF: Philosophy Is the Future of Presence
In the Now, we admit it’s easier to perform than to project.
In the New, we realize AI will match our output, but not our ethos.
In the Next, our philosophy becomes our most trusted form of presence.
So here’s your challenge:
Start sketching your philosophy.
Give it a name. A shape. A spine.
Don’t aim for perfection—aim for conviction.
Because in a world of rapid automation,
what you believe, not just what you do,
will become the most recognizable signal you send.
And that’s the shift.
From following playbooks to becoming one.
I invite you to join me on the #ShiftStory pilgrimage.

I’m Tobin Trevarthen, a Narratologist, founder of Spatial Shift by Tobin, and co-author of Narrative Generation.
I’ve spent decades in the corporate and start-up worlds, selling over $1 billion in marketing programs before shifting into narrative work designed to help people and organizations make sense of transformation through storytelling.
I’ve worked with founders, executives, startups, Global 1000 companies, and cultural institutions to design narrative frameworks that spark clarity and alignment.
Now New Next is where I reflect on the long game, with a sense of urgency. I write for modern elders, edge thinkers, and curious builders trying to name what matters now, what’s emerging, and what’s worth pursuing next.
You’ll find no hype here. Just a mix of strategy, story, and soulful direction for a shifting world. I also write about narrative worth, identity, and becoming a portraiture of yourself in modern times.
ShiftStory™ is my new ideation for building narrative agency in uncertain times. The pilot Walk n Talks have helped to shape the program now in progress with a few test customers.
I am pleased with the early feedback and will be launching the beta program this summer. It will be limited to 10 participants in the first cohort.
Follow me on LinkedIn. Or DM at tobin@spatialshift.com if you are curious to shift your story to the one you want it to become.
